Dental anxiety is common, and it can lead people to put off care until a small problem becomes a painful one. Depending on your needs, sedation can range from light relaxation to a much deeper level of calm. Your dentist will go over your health history with you and recommend what suits you best.

North Austin Sedation Dentistry FAQs
Will I feel pain while sedated?

No. For procedures that could cause discomfort, we also numb your mouth with local anesthetic. Sedation adds another layer of calm on top, so you can stay comfortable throughout the visit.
Can the dentist put me to sleep?

It depends on the type of sedation. Oral conscious sedation relaxes you but doesn’t put you to sleep. Deeper options, such as IV sedation, can leave you very drowsy or asleep. Your dentist will explain which choices are available and which is right for you.
How long do the effects last?

It varies by the type and amount of sedation. Oral sedation typically wears off in about an hour or so, while deeper sedation can take several hours. Plan to take it easy for the rest of the day either way.
Who is a good candidate for sedation?

It’s often a good fit for people with dental anxiety or phobia, a strong gag reflex, a fear of needles, trouble getting numb, or those having several procedures in one visit. Your dentist will review your health history before recommending anything.
What should I do after my appointment?

Arrange for someone to drive you home, since sedation can leave you groggy. Rest for the remainder of the day, avoid alcohol and operating machinery until the effects fully wear off, and follow the aftercare instructions we give you.
